In March 2021, mission controllers in Houston used the Canadarm2 robotic arm to release an external pallet packed with old nickel-hydrogen batteries from the International Space Station. Three years later, part of that assembly struck a house in Naples, Fla. The person is gassing it up.’ She said ‘Get out of the car and go get it and I jumped out of the car,” Obando said.

The International Space Station, which is roughly the size of a football field, is itself the subject of a "deorbit" plan, as it nears the end of its useful life after more than two decades of continuous human occupancy. NASA says the station will remain operational until at least 2030, and it's planning on "a controlled re-entry, targeted into a remote, uninhabited area in the ocean." He says he's "very optimistic" that changes to law and policies can reduce or eliminate threats to orbit-based systems. "I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that that's the greatest existing threat to humanity's use of outer space, that we're polluting the orbits to the extent where it could become difficult to use them at all," Sundahl said. In 1978, a Soviet satellite, Kosmos 954, "disintegrated over Canada and scattered radioactive fuel across the country," he said. "And they helped clean it up — in accordance with international law, they paid expenses."

Is an American television series that combines the medical drama and action-adventure genres. It was produced by Mark VII Limited and distributed by Universal Studios. It debuted as a midseason replacement on January 15, 1972, on NBC, replacing the two short-lived series The Partners and The Good Life, and ran until May 28, 1977, with six additional two-hour television films during the following two years. Station 127 was chosen for its natural lighting by series co-creator Robert A. Cinader, and the station was eventually named in his honor. A plaque honoring Robert A. Cinader is now mounted on the station next to the office front door. At the time of filming Station 127 housed Engine 127 and Truck 127, but it has never actually fielded its own paramedic unit.

Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) will introduce the companion legislation in the Senate. Biden, 30, has obvious ties to politics, but she also married a political junkie. Her husband, Peter Neal, interned at the White House during the Obama administration, and contributed to Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign.

NASA retrieved the object from Otero's home, and it recently confirmed the object was part of the battery pallet — a remnant of some 5,800 pounds of hardware — that was jettisoned from the space station. The "space object" was a stanchion, NASA said, that held the batteries on a cargo pallet. The surviving object was a little smaller than a soda can and made of Inconel, a superalloy that is strong and heat-resistant. Rachel Brosnahan of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel fame will join CNN's entourage on Saturday, April 27, as she prepares to enter the DC Comics Universe with her starring role as journalist Lois Lane in the 2025 Superman reboot. Pictures — which are producing and distributing the film, respectively — are both owned by CNN's parent company, Warner Bros. Newly minted Oscar winner Da'Vine Joy Randolph will join in the weekend festivities as another of ABC News' A-list guests. Fresh off a successful award season for her supporting role in The Holdovers, Randolph, 37, is one of the most exciting names in Hollywood right now. U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05), a member of the House Appropriations Committee, announced the approval of $40 million towards modernizing Chicago’s Union Station (CUS). The funding was part of Amtrak’s Fiscal Year 2024 annual appropriations requests and was included in the FY24 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations bill that was signed into law by President Biden on March 23, 2024.

Fortunately the suspect fled the scene without fighting back, but it isn’t recommended to take matters into your own hands since you never know if someone’s armed or unhinged. The Long Beach Police Department also advised against confronting a suspected thief out of safety concerns, but in this case, Obando’s boldness paid off. Station House resides steps from the city’s best restaurants, hippest bars, Union Station, and the DC Streetcar line in the heart of the Atlas District. Each of the smartly appointed apartments features unexpected perks complemented by active social spaces, unmatched amenities, and a notably altruistic spirit. All staff and volunteers are required to comply with the City of Los Angeles’ vaccination requirements for municipal employees, and stay at home if they are experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms. You can't have a White House Correspondents' Dinner without a host, and this year, emcee Colin Jost is expected to arrive with his wife, Scarlett Johansson, for moral support before taking the stage.

And in 1997, an Oklahoma woman was outside when she was tapped on her shoulder by a piece of mesh from a Delta II rocket. "It will depend on whose module of the space station that came from," said Sundahl, who is the director of the Global Space Law Center at Cleveland State University. When asked how much damage the space object caused, Otero says his homeowners' insurance set the adjusted cost at more than $15,000, adding that he's also been evaluating other damages not covered by insurance. "The location of the reentry was predicted by the 18th Space Defense Squadron to be in the Gulf of Mexico," the Aerospace Corporation, a research and development nonprofit that advises the U.S. government, said in a statement to NPR. "Naples FL was directly downrange of that location and in the direction that the debris would have been traveling." As a native Long Beach resident, as with all cities, I was always taught to remove all valuables from your car when you park or at least hide them from view.

That concern grew, Otero said, when he later realized the object may have been linked to a power module used in space. The museum is not available as a location for private events, photoshoots, filming, or fundraisers. In September, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 2188 (AB-2188), which addresses how an employer can test employees or potential employees for cannabis. There is at least one documented case of a person being hurt by something falling from the heavens. A woman in Alabama was struck by a meteorite that crashed into her home in 1954 (she survived with a bruise) — but that case didn't involve space debris.

When the object hit Otero's house in southwest Florida, his son was just a couple rooms over from the impact point. It was cylindrical, and while one end was melted by the heat of reentry, the other had a smooth round shape with a circular indentation. "He wasn't even sure how to tell me what happened and we had to look and listen to the security cameras to try to piece together what caused the loud crashing noise," he said. "It looked like it caused the whole house to shake, so we weren't sure if there had been an earthquake or what. When he saw the hole coming through the house, he realized something fell through."

"So this is something new," in Florida, said Sundahl, whose group recently hosted a symposium on threats posed by orbital debris. The U.S. is currently tracking nearly 45,000 objects in orbit, including some 18,800 pieces of space debris, according to Space-Track.org, U.S. Space Command's public website. "We have an international convention on liability for damage caused by outer space objects. It's from 1972. So we have rules in place." "The hardware was expected to fully burn up during entry through Earth's atmosphere," NASA said after conducting its analysis. The agency is working to figure out how part of it hit Otero's house, adding that it may need to tweak the engineering models it uses to estimate how objects break up during atmospheric reentry.

On Thursday, the Hamas leader, Ismail Haniyeh, told an Egyptian official that his group was examining the proposal. A Hamas delegation will go to Egypt soon to “complete the ongoing discussions” for a deal that “realizes our people’s demands and ends the aggression,” according to a statement from the group. In June of 2022, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) received four cybertips from an Electronic Service Provider reporting that Welbourne was involved in the possession of child sexual abuse material (CSAM).

The proposal, after almost seven devastating months of war, includes the release of hostages held by Hamas and Palestinian prisoners in Israel, and the return of civilians to the largely depopulated northern part of Gaza. It would also allow for increased delivery of aid to the territory. In the case of a patient with infectious or communicable diseases, administrative approval should be sought before visiting the patient. The cost for a birth certificate is $12.00 for each certificate.

Visitors must be the same four (4) people for the length of the patient’s stay. Siblings may visit for short periods of time (during visiting hours) and must be accompanied by an adult. Children should never be left in the care of the admitted patient.

Far-right parties in Mr. Netanyahu’s coalition have hinted at leaving it if he calls off the offensive, which could cause the government to collapse and force new elections. The complex negotiations have dragged on for months, with each bargaining piece moved also shifting several others. Complicating matters further is that Israel and the United States do not talk directly with Hamas, which they consider a terrorist organization, but communicate through officials of Qatar and Egypt who act as intermediaries.

District Judge Sheri Polster Chappell has sentenced Richard Welbourne (67, Port Charlotte) to 51 months in federal prison for possessing and accessing with intent to view images depicting the sexual abuse of children. More than 34,000 Palestinians have been killed amid Israel’s bombardment of the territory, according to health officials in the territory. The Department, nationally accredited by the Public Health Accreditation Board, works to protect, promote and improve the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county and community efforts. In calming some in his party, though, Mr. Biden took heat from others on the political left. The number of Palestinians Israel is offering to free in exchange is unclear. Hamas has insisted that any agreement would eventually lead to a permanent cease-fire, not just a temporary halt in the fighting — a stance that Israel has rejected as a Hamas play for time to re-establish itself as a governing and military force. The Biden administration has held out hope that a six-week pause in the war could be the first step toward a lasting end to the fighting. “We will enter Rafah and we will eliminate the Hamas battalions there — with or without a deal — in order to achieve the total victory,” Mr. Netanyahu said in a statement released on Tuesday. But Israeli officials have said, consistently and emphatically, that the offensive will take place.

Roughly a million displaced Palestinians have sought shelter in Rafah from the Israeli bombardment and ground fighting that health officials say have killed more than 34,000 people across Gaza. Israel has said that the purpose of the planned invasion is to root out Hamas fighters there. The president’s four-minute statement came after some Democrats frustrated by his reluctance to speak out pressed him to publicly address the campus uprisings. Until Thursday, Mr. Biden had offered only a couple of sentences in response to reporter questions on April 22 that even Democrats considered too equivocal and otherwise left it to his spokespeople to express his views.

Earth Fare to shutter SouthPark store less than a year after reopening

earth fare charlotte nc

It’s a remarkable reversal of fortune for Earth Fare, made possible probably because of COVID-19 and the hefty new profits generated by the grocery industry as more people stay home and cook. In February, the Asheville-based company said it was saddled with $65 million in debt, closed all 50 of its stores and laid off nearly 3,300 workers after filing for bankruptcy protection. Barely six months after filing for bankruptcy and closing all its locations, Earth Fare plans to reenter the Charlotte market and open as many as five stores in the area — possibly by the end of the year.

Earth Fare to shutter SouthPark store less than a year after reopening

When they heard of Earth Fare’s liquidation, Talley, Derrough and others sprang into action because they always believed in the idea that shoppers are hungry for natural foods. The new team picked up three stores and the company name in a March bankruptcy auction and have been working ever since to sign new leases on some of the old Earth Fare locations. “It was kind of a quick open,” Betsy Bevis, Earth Fare’s director of marketing, told the Observer, adding that the grocer has already held “quick and fast” openings for 13 stores in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Virginia and Michigan over about 15 weeks. The company also wished to keep crowd size low to keep shoppers safe during the pandemic. Earth Fare has adopted such safety measures as mandatory face coverings; continually sanitized register belts, carts and baskets; designated entrances and exits, social- distancing floor markers, nightly deep cleaning; and shields at the registers between customers and cashiers. Asheville, North Carolina-based hospitality and medical facility management company Hulsing Enterprises, which purchased Earth Fare this past March in the wake of the retailer’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, has been quietly reopening Earth Fare locations across six states. Months after abruptly revealing it would close its corporate office and all 55 of its locations across 10 states and begin liquidating its assets, natural food retailer Earth Fare made a low-key comeback in one of its former key markets, Charlotte, North Carolina, opening a store in SouthPark on Oct. 7. The new company now operates 11 stores, including one in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and hopes to have 25 by the end of the year, Talley said.

At that time, Hulsing, which purchased leases in Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia, said that it also intended to reopen seven stores in South Carolina; currently five are open. “They must have grown too fast and opened stores that they probably shouldn’t have opened,” founderRoger Derrough told the Ledger in February. He started Earth Fare as a small store called “Dinner for the Earth” on Merrimon Avenue north of downtown Asheville in 1975 at age 24.

They’ve assembled a team of experienced grocery executives who believe in its vision and want to stick to its roots. But Talley, known in Charlotte as the owner of the old Talley’s Green Grocery in Dilworth (now Fresh Market on East Boulevard), started working old investor friends and former organic grocery executives in Asheville to try to buy some of the former locations. The Sydney Opera House by Jørn Utzon: A Masterpiece of Modern Architecture

sydney opera house architect

The cost of the project so far, even in October 1966, was still only A$22.9 million,[50] less than a quarter of the final $102 million cost. The bulk of construction is now happening on the eastern side of the city with about 10 major build-to-rent projects in various stages which will house 20,000 people within the next decade. “The show must go on” is deeply ingrained in McDonald, who knew she wanted to make theatre her life when she stepped on stage at a dinner theatre event at age nine, and is touring Australia in May. “I like to say that I got plugged into the right charger,” she says.

Early life and career

Performers and theater-goers said that the acoustics were poor and that the theater didn't have enough performance or backstage space. When Utzon left the project in 1966, exteriors were built, but the built designs of the interiors were overseen by Peter Hall. In 1999, the parent organization brought back Utzon to document his intent and help solve some of the thorny interior design problems. The exterior construction materials included preccast rib segments "rising to a ridge beam" and a concrete pedestal "clad in earth-toned, reconstituted granite panels." The design was for shells to be clad with glazed off-white tiles. Utzon called this process of construction "additive architecture," where prefabricated elements were joined onsite to create a whole.

Jorn Utzon's Plan for the Sydney Opera House

At the third and final stage of the project under the supervision of the newly appointed architects Utzon's original design was signifcantly changed. At the request of the Australian Broadcasting Commission the proposed main hall that was originally designed as a multipurpose opera/concert became a space solely for concerts, thus titled the Concert Hall which is able to accomodate 2,800 people. On February 28, 1966 after a long battle with the New South Wales Government because of the rising construction costs as the concrete shells were progressing towards their completion, Utzon resigned from the project. Despite a 3000-signature protest for Utzon's reinstatement the government appointed three Australian architects, Peter Hall, DS Littlmore, and Lionel Todd, to complete the project. After the 2,194th precast shell segment was installed in 1967 the second stage of the project was finished. The construction of the podium began when Utzon was not yet done with the design of the opera house, and was overseen by the renowned engineering firm Ove Arup & Partners.

To quote US architect Frank Gehry, “(it) changed the image of an entire country.” Delve into the controversy of the building and into a new era of cultural discovery and community engagement when you step inside for a tour. With his emphasis on ‘common sense,’ concrete materiality and the urban scale of many of his ‘megastructure’ projects, John Andrews fits firmly into twentieth-century modernism. This exhibition certainly serves on one level to simply shed light on an under-told story. However, with a focus on architectural publishing and discourse, it has also used archival detective work to open up new ways of framing the work of an architect who rarely engaged in self-promotion. “The narratives around Andrews’ career are largely one-dimensional,” notes Liu, who poses an emphasis on Andrews’ communication as an alternative framing. With its bespoke detailing and premium materials palette – a textured blend of Calacatta marble, Italian travertine, inlaid Flemish copper and more – our design embodies luxury of the highest international standards.

Australia: Sport and Identity

Structural engineers found Utzon's design would fail in the Australian wind, so by 1962 the current ribbed shell system was proposed. The year after architect Jorn Utzon won the competition and commission, structural engineers from London-based Arup & Partners were brought on board for every stage of construction. On 9 April 1956, Danish architect Jørn Utzon AC celebrated his 38th birthday and set to work in his modest office in Hellenbaek, north of Copenhagen, on his designs for the competition. He said that Hughes's refusal to pay him any fees and the lack of collaboration caused his resignation and later described the situation as "Malice in Blunderland". In March 1966, Hughes offered him a subordinate role as "design architect" under a panel of executive architects, without any supervisory powers over the House's construction, but Utzon rejected this. The building also houses a recording studio, retail shops, cafes, restaurants, bars including the Opera Bar and Opera Kitchen.

Upon graduation a travel scholarship enabled him to spend twelve months in Europe during which time he visited Utzon in Hellebæk.[75] Returning to Sydney, Hall worked for the Government Architect, a branch of the NSW Public Works Department. While there he established himself as a talented design architect with a number of court and university buildings, including the Goldstein Hall at the University of New South Wales, which won the Sir John Sulman Medal in 1964. It is a multipurpose performing arts facility whose largest venue, the 2,679-seat Concert Hall, is host to symphony concerts, choir performances, and popular music shows. Opera and dance performances, including ballet, take place in the Opera Theatre (renamed the Joan Sutherland Theatre in 2012 as a tribute to the celebrated Australian operatic soprano), which seats just over 1,500. There are also three theatres of different sizes and configurations for stage plays, film screenings, and smaller musical performances.

Later life

The Forecourt, on the southeastern end of the complex, is used for outdoor performances. Please note that as we are a busy performing arts centre, venues and theatres are subject to availability at the time of your tour. You will have the opportunity to visit some of the Opera House’s many venues and theatres on this tour. This elegant solution allowed for the structure of the shells to be built off site and removed the need for the super expensive onsite formwork.

And what were the influences that formed him?

This base building is very angular and covered in dark stone, giving it a very solid tectonic image. Even the openings on its façade appear to have been made after it was completed, using the same stone that should otherwise cover the opening as a visor to the window. When Utzon was ceased payment and was forced to retire as chief architect he left Australia and never came back until 1999 when he saw the finished building for the first time. From conception to construction, the Sydney Opera House tested the limits of engineering, building and design.

"Rebuild or remodel" is a decision commonly faced by homeowners, developers, and governments alike. A widely-told story is that Saarinen, who had missed the beginning of the ten days set aside for judging, was underwhelmed by the already shortlisted entrants and pulled Utzon’s entry out of a pile of rejected schemes, exclaiming that it was easily the winning design. The drawings submitted for this scheme are simple to the point of being diagrammatic. Nevertheless, as we have returned again and again to the study of these drawings, we are convinced that they present a concept of an Opera House which is capable of becoming one of the great buildings of the world.

Many details reference the soft curves and bronze materiality of the external facade, by Australian architects Tzannes, while a generous provision of space and proportion further heightens the opulence. The crowning achievement of this collaboration is the Opera House’s most recognisable design component, the concrete roof sails, which hold 1,056,006 ceramic tiles. There was no precedent anywhere is the world for building the sails, which needed to be self-supporting. The Opera House’s complex design presented a unique opportunity for close collaboration between engineering and architecture. It also pushed engineering boundaries, creating technical innovation and establishing design conventions we still use today. Making the glass walls appear as if they were hanging from the shells was the key challenge to solve.

Behind schedule and over budget, multi-year projects — especially government projects — are difficult to complete, especially in the time before computer-aided design. Arup began to doubt Utzon's specifications, but the architect wanted complete control and the necessary funds to complete his blueprints. By 1966, after seven years of construction and a change in Australia's government, Utzon resigned under the continued pressure. The Danish architect Jørn Utzon grew up on the water near a shipyard and around sails. By 1956, the year of his opera house competition entry, Utzon had inherited broadly from the artistic, cultural and scientific revolutions that arose out of this immense period of change. Like many architects, Jørn Utzon had initially entered the competition to design Sydney’s opera house to exercise his ideas.

At an election night dinner party in Mosman, Hughes’ daughter Sue Burgoyne boasted that her father would soon sack Utzon. A fraud, as well as a philistine, he had been exposed before Parliament and dumped as Country Party leader for 19 years of falsely claiming a university degree. For him, as for Utzon, it was all about control; about the triumph of homegrown mediocrity over foreign genius. "It is my hope that the building shall be a lively and ever-changing venue for the arts," Jorn Utzon told reporters. "Future generations should have the freedom to develop the building to contemporary use." The Opera house was completed by other designers under the direction of Peter Hall.

The location is wonderful but I think breakfast should be included. The front desk staff were fabulous and the breakfast bar was a life-saver with Tupelo Honey's not open nearby.
